My buddy has a 98 Quest and it idles irradically and sometimes when it is cold he can smell a slight odor of fuel coming thru the vents when the defrost is on. We are not sure if it is the IAC or fuel filter or something else. O btw, where is the fuel filter on this model, tank or frame rail? Thanx for any help.

what are the trouble codes from the OBDII scanner?

filter: depends if you have the CA model, which is under the vehicle, follow along the parking brake cable

non-CA models are located in the engine bay

It is showing no codes which is weird but I guess it could happen. The reason I'm asking is bcause the IAC costs so much, I dont want to purchase one if its not needed. I will try to change the fuel filter first bcause my buddy is not good with maintenence.

I had the same problem with a 98 Quest. It turned out to be loose clamps on rubber hose connections inbetween the two metal fuel rails (where the injectors are mounted). Sometimes these can be tightened but it is best to replace them with standard band clamps. There was also a leak on a rubber fuel hose that was under the intake manifold. The intake manifold needed to be removed to get to it. The hose was barely visible when looking into the intake manifold where the injectors for the cylinders in the back of the engine near the driver's side are located. Maybe you will be lucky and be able to tighten the band clamp without removing the intake manifold.
