Hello,

I have a 1997 i30 with 130,000 miles on it and i was told i should have gotten a timing belt at 105,000. Has anyone had any problems or recommendations for me?

you're good. they don't need to be replaced until they break - and i haven't heard of one breaking yet

the timing chain is designed for the life of the engine. your "someone" is wrong - no offense. if the timing chain breaks the engine will turn off because the ignition timing will stop working.

It might be designed to last the life of the engine, but if it does break it'll be catastrophic. The VQ is an interference engine, which means valves and pistons overlap, so if timing gets too offset you'll end up with bent valves or worse.

However, the chain will only break if something goes wrong. It was designed never to need to be replaced.

finxed idk if it'll get that far though. without the chain turning the cams it should stall out almost right away. shouldn't it? i'm guessing because i haven't seen a thread on any max forum about a timing chain breaking so it's hard to say for sure.

Cams might stall out, pistons will keep moving for at least one of a number of reasons. Valves will be lifted somewhere, and that's where it will go bad. Believe me, it's bad. Tons and tons and tons of engines are the same way and there are lots and lots of stories out there about people loosing engines to belt or chain failure.

I wouldn't even bother with it at 105k. Even later Nissan BELTS were good for almost that long. Chain should be good for over 300k miles unless something goes wrong. 105k is pretty much nothing to these motors. Tons of life left.

The best thing you can do for your car is to let it warm up after itis started, ESPECIALLY during cold weather.

My car is pretty noisy on start up but once the oil starts workingin the parts on the upper engine (valves etc) it runs fine.

As long as you don't drive the crap out of it and its been taken care of, you're fine. If it's had some major mechanical problems in the engine you might check into it.

My '97 I30 is over 300,000 miles. Stop worrying.
