My 94 Q45 a/c has recently developed this problem. It takes about 5 or 6 minutes for the a/c to start cooling. Once it starts cooling it cools perfectly - quite cold, in fact. The compressor was replaced about 3 years ago, and freon pressures are in spec once it is cooling. However it takes those several minutes for the pressures to come into spec - almost like the compressor is barely working - then all at once they drop into range and the cooling kicks in. It's not gradual.

I know what everyone's thinking - it's just the heat load in this hot weather! Well, that's not it. It's behaving this way whether the temperature is in the low 80s with the car in the garage or over 100 with the car in the sun! And in either case after several minutes you'd swear there was nothing wrong with it.

Any suggestions? I really hope I'm not looking at a new compressor in such a short time!

Interesting problem... I know the compressor is a variable displacement compressor, so the swash plate can get stuck sometimes locking it in "low" mode when it should be running harder. Not sure how all of that works though. Was this new compressor OEM new, aftermarket, or remanufactured?

Is the compressor clutch engaged during this initial period when it's not cooling?

Hello Heath!
The compressor was OEM new, installed by my Infiniti dealer. And yes, the clutch is engaged during that initial interval. You've got the scenario nailed. I'm also thinking it has to do with the variable displacement compressor - but also I'm not too familiar with how it works (or doesn't work!).

Any idea whether these compressors are repairable (by my dealer) should that be the case?

dannyducharme;

Your PM's are currently shut off so I am posting in your most recent threads. I do not have my Q45 any more I crushed it in December 2011. I how ever can go to a local salvage yard and get you what you need. They have about 4 there mostly untouched other than the parts I have pulled and resold.
