Just bought a '90 hatch. I'm planning to do a full rebuild with all forged internals and bore and port. I guess I should probably do a nice sea foaming first huh?

But I guess my question is has anyone bored and ported a KA24E? and if so how did it work out, like compression ratios and such?

IIRC, there are a number of ppl on here who have done full ka24e, and even ka24e-t builds, with good results.

Worse come to worse, you can always scan thru the sticky of build threads and see if you can spot the KA-E and KA-E-T builds by title. Or use the search button up over there. Or wait till someone else has a better idea. Either way, if you wanna do a ka-e build out, DO IT! :mike They seem to work pretty well if done properly and corners aren't cut. Just know that the mechanical tuning limit for a KA(24DE, anyways) seems to be around +/- 200hp ish, if my lying memory isn't lying to me again. I can't imagine the ka-e being much different. So if you're looking for more than that, you may have to turbo it. But like I said, there have been ka-e-t builds on here that worked pretty sweet, too.

I ask this of everyone, but, what are you planning to use the car for? Daily? Racing? Both? Neither?

Both really, I want the car to be street legal so I can drive it. But it definitely won't be my daily driver unless something happens to my GTI. So I guess "racing" wouldn't be its best application, but I'm aiming for ~350-400whp if that gives you an idea.

The real problem seems to be that in the amount I would spend on boring, porting, and rebuilding, I could get an SR or RB swap.

And if I decide to stay KA, I'm having a hard time finding good forged internals, except on ebay, and I'm skeptical about most Ebay parts.

Why are you going to seafoam it if you're going to tear it down?

To get to that power level on a KA, pretty sure you'll need something more extreme than higher compression, aggressive cams, and more fuel - like a turbo in addition to those other things. So! You have many options. KAE-T, KADE-T, SR, RB, or w/e really. People on here also do CA, VG, VQ, JZ, and LS engines too. And still others. It all depends on how deep you want to get into it. For something more simple-ish, I'd suggest KADE-T or SR20. Plenty of documentation support, plenty of parts available. Even RB20/25 swaps are pretty well-trodden paths. More pricey and harder to get parts, but still not too overly complex.

What kind of "racing" would you be doing, and how did you decide on that hp number? Just curious.

Yeah I am definitely planning on going forced induction. I refuse to go LS1 lol, and I'd rather not go JZ. I'm trying to keep it Nissan, if I wanted those engines, I'd just buy a Camaro or Supra lol. Now I've never done a swap before, but that isn't to say I'm opposed to it as it would be a great learning experience. But that also means I need a bit more equipment. My level of knowledge is quite basic about internals of an engine, but hey, I'll never know if I don't try.

If I were to swap it would probably be SR20, just because the availability of parts. You suggested KADE-T, from the reading I've done it seems like swapping to KADE would kind of be a waste of money.

If I were to do any racing, it would most likely be time attack, and/or possibly autoX. I decided 350-400 was a pretty good number based on the weight of the car and if I were to race, I wouldn't be going to Nationals or anything lol.

I'll sea foam it so it there wont be as much carbon buildup... I will be keeping some stock parts, though i haven't decided what yet.
