So I took advantage of a local dealership's "special", since I was due to change the oil in all of my cars at around the same time... so I thought, let me use this. It was only when they were done did I notice that they used this grade oil... in a SYNTHETIC BLEND formula... will it be ok given the very low miles I drive this thing between changes?

You'll be fine with the 5W-20 . For the past year, I've used 0W-20 (Mobil 1 Extended performance or AFE) and I'll no longer use anything else. Engine is much quieter, smoother, and warms up much much faster than when i was using 10W-30. Oh, and I did notice a very slight MPG improvement as well. Highly recommend it :dblthumb:

Really??? okay... although I'm pretty sure any MPG gains from using this grade oil would be nixed by my Achilles heel KS codes and my EGR vacuum solenoid malfunction... well, at least I have this to look forward to after the problems are fixed... thanks for the info.

Thinner oil means less internal friction, and that means less energy (gas) consumed regardless of any KS or EGR issues.

For a really good explanation of oil viscosity and science, check out motor oil 101 at the Bob is The Oil Guy site.

I don't normally link to other sites - but the explanation here is too good not to point out. After reading it, I switched to M1 0-W30 in my cars. 0-W20 might be fine too, but I'm not prepared to do that without checking oil pressures - and I haven't had time to get a gauge and do that yet.

I've been running Rotella T 15W40, and I can't see one bit of difference in mileage. 70% of that is highway. I do not try to maximize mileage, I try to minimize time. It's valuable. In cold mornings start up seems to go OK. Also, I use Lucas Oil fuel additive regularly 6 oz/tank. Seems to reduce oil consumption to about 1 qt/800-1000miles. Without it I use a qt/500-600miles.

Back to the Rotella T. My reasoning is since the rings are "loose" tolerance, there is blow by, and the thicker oil gets diluted more slowly than a thinner viscosity oil. Flame away if you like, but it works for me.

The reason you need a thicker oil is because many of the last generation Q's had an inherent propensity to consume oil... you have the first year of that redesign, so it seems like a textbook case. Ask other F50 owners and they'll probably agree... seems like the thicker goo is working for ya...march on, I guess.

+1 for 0w30. I actually have been running 0w31.67 for a while now.
Very convenient with the 6qt sump to pick up a 5 jug of the AFE at chinamart and then top the last QT with M1 0w40.
I experimented with the rotella t (5w40-synth) a few years back. it is an extremely STOUT oil with great anti-wear properties, but may have a propensity to poison cats due to part of the anti wear package(be careful if you are subject to periodic smog). the stuff is waaaay too thick for the vh45de---I could actually feel the windage of that goo slowing the crank. not to mention the vh45de has very tight bearing tolerances--40 weight may actually cause oil starvation.....

I think you are fine, I run Amsoil 5-30 and that is a great weight overall for the Q45. You will be fine unless you live in Arizona 120 heat.

Thanks dudes... I was worried about the lighter weight possibly burning up more between oil changes... given the fact that the VH41DE generates a lot more under hood heat at N.O.T. than most other cars, but if some of you guys have been using 0W-XX, then I feel pretty good about it... and I change the oil in this thing only twice a year now...in the two years I've had it, only put 6,000 on it... it's a project car that may never become a project...
