My shift knob will not shift completely back into park. I was cleaning my plastic panels, and I took them out and the shift knob as well. When I put it all back together, the shift knob goes into park but will not lock, and can simply be bumped back into reverse (regardless if the ignition is on). I tried everything I could think of, any ideas?

Connection between the brake pedal and locking mechanism on the shifter?

Im not sure where that is or how I might have disconnected it? Ill post a pic in a sec of what it looks like...theres a plastic white thing that is suppose to get lifted up but it appears the shifter is not going forward all the way. But I cant even force it further...

OMG!! I am not the only one who has done something like this??

I don't know about the G35 since I drive an old Datsun 620...but I would take it apart again and start over. Look at your FSM if you have one...also by starting over you will have a better chance at seeing your mistake, especially if you have taken this apart before.

This is how I have found my mistakes. Hope this helps.

By looking at your pics I would say that your center console is not aligned forward all the way. That is the best explanation for the shift knob not going all the way forward.

I've gotta agree with Aaron and say that taking everything back apart and starting over is probably the best bet for a quick fix.

If you pulled the trim panel around the shifter off you need to have the car in neutral in order to get a proper fit.

hmm. I fiddled around with it for the last couple hours. No luck. Bringing it in to the dealer tomorrow. ugh. 3 hour drive from my house. Also now when I shift into DS it doesnt recognize it, stays in normal still. Can't manual shift. Why me!

oh, side note, I only removed the trim, nothing that would have allowed the shift to be moved forward or back. I dont think theres any way the trim supports it? It has quite a bit of give.

Possible that you dropped one of the little spring clips in there? About the only thing that I can think of.

well I brought it in yesterday. It was the shift knob housing. Covered by warranty. Another guy, with the non-X sedan had same problem same day. Weird. Anyways, they gave me an EX35 and it feels like a mommy G. haha. Lotta fun to drive though for a crossover. My girlfriend wants one. Thanks for the help though.

I am sure glad mine doesn't have anything that looks like that lol. It has 7 gates and that is it... no locking crap!

Here's an update. They replaced the shift housing. Didn't fix the problem. They went out to a car on the lot, and removed the all the shift stuff in the center and put it in my car, didn't work. So they had to order something deeper, and now I am waiting for another phone call update.

What the hell did you do to you shifter? I can see having to replace the finisher plate and the shift control device if it were damaged from misalignment (very easy to do). However I am at a loss on what happened to this.

So I'm staring at this picture I took at work a while back and I am wondering what you took off? Hopefully we can help other people from making this same mistake.

The only things I took off were the shifter knob, and the two pieces of plastic on the top, the one surrounding the shift knob, and the one just behind it. Nothing else. They said it should be ready tomorrow after noon if installation of the new parts go well. Like I said this happened to another G and he dropped off his G the same time I did. When I go pick it up I will try to get all the details there, maybe get more insight into what happened...

I ran across your post as i was trying to repair my daughters 2008 Altima with the same problem as yours, except the shift nob removal wasn't the cause of the issues.( she told me it just happened monday?) now that i recall when i got the call she said the shifter would not move. so i did remove the safety shift lock.
i pulled the trim off first and then i pull of the hole center console and put the shift nob back and drove it around for a day and it drove fine, the transmission works perfect
and the auto shift.
I changed the bake light switch at the brake pedal, no luck, brake lights are fine i check all the fuses.
i know its been a long time but did they ever tell you what they did to repair the issue.
if you remember of course. thx

I am having the exact same problem! Also, now my auto exit is no longer working. I was able to take off that part with the spring and it now stays in park, but you can move it with your thumb. Did we ever get the details on this?
