Looking for a 280zx turbo stick. Should I get an 82 or 83? Cannot find a clear list of the standard equip vs the optional equipment. Was there a GL version in 82 or 83? Was leather only part of the digital dash option? Desire a low mileage very clean example. Where can I find the colors available for 82 & 83? The pricing guide I found was :
low $4400
avg $6800
high$10,000
Yet some dealers are asking $12k to $20k.
Members opinions would be appreciated.

As far as I know, there aren't too many differences between the 82-83 at all. Maybe the rubber trim around the body, 82 went all the way around, 83 didn't. Mechanically, I believe that they are identical.

Some 83T's have the P90A hydraulic head, which is "less desirable" as it can create valve float at high rpm, and there are no more replacement lifters for it.

But $12k-$20k for a stock turbo? Ha... I've bought all 4 of my 280zx Turbos for less than $500. If you are looking for a fun car with no problems, I'll sell you my restored and modified 300whp 280zxt for $12k. $7k in engine work, and lots of other goodies including LSD. All primered, just needs paint.

besides the heads i dont think there were any differance between the 82 and 83. and yes both of the years had the gl model and can be identified under the hood by the passenger side firewall. as for the price it mainly depends on the condition overall and the type. mine is an 83 2+2 turbo with the t5. yeah it has its problems but i think it was well worth it.

The hydraulic head is actually on most 82 and 83's and is only less desirable if you want to make a race motor, for a street driven car the hydraulic head is preferred. Mechanically they are the same car, the 2+2 is far less desirable than the 2 seater and the auto is far less desirable than the 5 speed. just be sure the car you buy is a "C" code car, the vin number should read "JN1CZ" if it anything but a "C" it's not a factory turbo car, this rule applies on all Z cars up through 96 models.
