Thanks Greg - Nice spy shots indeed. I can see the doors look like the concept model.

Do you think we will see a seven speed automatic like the RWD Infiniti siblings?

Ok - not to be a pessimist here, but I'm still expecting a CVT even though you mention you hear shifting.

The newly reprogrammed CVTs will simulate shifting upon moderate to full throttle. Our 2014 Rogue does this.

Now, would I be ALL ABOUT there being a 7 speed auto in this car? Absolutely - for a couple reasons. The primary being that Nissan only currently builds a 7 speed auto for RWD platforms, which could mean that the Maxima could finally make a return to RWD. This would mean that Nissan would finally have a premium flagship that fully differentiates itself from the Altima, which has further encroached upon the Maxima's place in the lineup for the past couple redesigns now.

I am watching very closely.

It would be nice to have someone crawl under the car and see if there's a rear diff :)

The product strategy for the new A platform Altima/Teanna /Q30 appears to be solid. That should make Nissan investors happy.

At this point, if I was a large Nissan institutional investor I would question the logic behind introducing a new Maxima that is not sharing the new Skyline/Q40 or Q50 platform.

^ 100% agreed. The Altima and Sentra have really rendered the Maxima redundant.

However, there's room for a "downscale" Nissan version of the M or G sedans.

It definitely crossed my mind that the "shifting" could have been just the electronic control of the CVT, but from the exterior, the "faux shifts" in a CVT don't sound like shifts.

I'm sure the "Money Men" reamed out Carlos big time over the whole JATCO CVT fiasco. So he promptly threw JATCO management under the bus then sent his favorite "Toyota Boy" over to Japan to hopefully straighten out the mess.

If they don't start turning around the CVT problem with products that sell, Carlos will be thrown under the bus -- most likely by somebody from a car company named Ford.

PS this is not an industry rumor.

Dear lord let them get the CVT fixed then. I've soured on Nissan some over the last couple of years, but a Furd takeover would end it for me. I had a horrible experience with them a couple of decades ago...

If the unthinkable rear wheel drive happened for the Maxima, It would be the front runner for G replacement. The Q50 sounds so glitchy that I'm afraid of it.

UGH, I think its ugly. Saw the new Murano at the dealer today. I think its ugly also. I'm retired so it could be a senior thing. They both remind me of Infinity's

Nissan and the Maxima have left me so far behind it's midlly hilarious.

This thing is certainly no contender for "J30 of its time". Maximas before the A34 were all clean and refined--very tastefully executed with sharp, well-realized detail. Now, it's just a huge mess. The details are terrible, the proportions are cartoonish. And it doesn't do anything special. Why buy a Maxima over an Altima? 20 years ago that was a stupid question. Now, it's entirely legitimate and very hard to answer (especially where the Altima now offers the same powertrain with more usable space!).

As for these renderings:

The floating roof a-pillar design looks ridiculous on a "coupelike" profile.
The nose looks like a poorly executed copy of a Mazda.
The beltline is all over the place.
That c-pillar is beyond words.
Those wheels.
The rear view looks like a Lexus.
Why does everything need highly-visible-when-unlit fender signals? Anyone hear of smoked lenses? The mirrors are BLACK. Why are the repeaters white?
Why the Hell are the door handles not body color? It looks like a damn F150 chrome geezer redneck package.

I hate it. Not that I expect anything else these days.

If this is a Q50S stripped, (RWD and not CVT) I would go to the dealer in a heartbeat, check and open the hood and talk to the sales rep.

Won't be.

It's FWD with a CVT (although the CVT works very well in a V6 car).

I drove 2 Maxima's. First was a 1991 Maxima, that thing was amazing. Such a smooth drive. Believe it or not, that thing gave my family over 700,000 km...wish I took a picture of the odometer before it moved on to Maxima Heaven. 2nd Maxima my family owned was a 2006 Maxima. Last Maxima made before the dreaded CVT. Beautiful car. Just recently lost it to a car accident as it was written off (I am lucky to be alive though). Car was super reliable much like the 1991 Maxima and drove great..no problems whatsoever. Just regular maintenance. I had just under 350,000 km before I was t-boned. It would have driven easily upwards of 500,000 km likely within in the next 10 years. It's a damn shame that car went to the scrap yard.

So I was looking for a new car this month and I did like the look of the new 2016 Maxima (minus the front grill) so I decided to give the car a test drive. The vehicle had everything I needed with every option (tested the Platinum). I had heard about the CVT but never driven one until now. I heard that it was an updated CVT and was supposedly a big step up on the previous gen. It was however in my opinion terrible. You feel no shifts and it was a very boring drive and just didn't cut it. Felt like it was always in one gear (which it essentially is). FWD doesn't bother me but there is no way they can label this car a 4DSC while running a CVT. I instead opted for an Infiniti Q50 AWD - Limited, and probably got it cheaper than what I would have paid for the Maxima. The Infiniti is slightly smaller (notice it in the trunk space and hip room etc.) but overall I think for the money, it is a better buy than the Maxima. I won't go back to a Maxima until they go back to a regular Automatic Transmission, and should likely include AWD as an option as well.

Welcome to NICO, pac_4_ever!

I found myself in a similar situation with shopping for cars (have a baby on the way and the 370Z I had wasn't a family fit any longer) and tried the Maxima myself. Needless to say, I'm now in a 2015 Q50S and don't regret it for a second over the latest Maxima. It's definitely not what it used to be and the CVT is a large reason for that being the case.
