2009 Versa for $9999 is really, really basic.

It sounds like a Mexican-market Volkswagen, but I like it. Not since the early 1990s has a car from a major manufacturer been so conservatively equipped. The phrase "basic transportation" these days often refers to a fully loaded Civic with big wheels, satellite radio, ornate lighting, a thumping sound system, and low profile tires. Basic, my butt.

Even better, Nissan doesn't beat around the bush by calling it something deceptively cheap like "Value Edition" or "Sport" . It's simply called "VERSA 1.6 BASE".

The honesty is refreshing. However, ten grand will buy a very nice used Maxima, a more reliable and irrefutably fantastic car to drive.

Well hell, if I were getting one I'd add AC, ABS, and cruise..........the only options a daily/trip vehicle needs outta that list IMO. Oh well.........good price on it though.

Your final comment sums up my thoughts: a $10k new car is pointless to me because there are used cars.

However, a lot of people would rather have a cheap new car with a warranty.

And if a car ever needed one the Versa seems to.

How can it not come with ABS? I thought that was a 2008 law requiring all new cars standard with it?

Yep, this is exactly right.

If you want a brand new car with a warranty and you don't want an Aveo, this is a good bet.

And I agree with Jesda, it's nice to see someone selling a "stripper" car in the US again, as I definitely think there's a market for it.

Also though, with the new vs. used argument, if someone is financing the car, you can often get much better rates on a new car from the manufacturer than on a used car, and so sometimes the more expensive new car works out to a lower monthly payment over the same term than a somewhat cheaper used car. For many buyers, the monthly obligation is more important to them than the actual price of the vehicle.

Now if only they'd sell a "stripper" NC Miata for $15k, lol.

I take it drum brakes are for men as well?

It was embarrasing that my '93 had drums in the back. Fifteen years later it's just inexcusable.

All four corners baby, just like a musclecar!

For a car with the build quality of a yard shed and a lawnmower engine under the hood drums get it done.

I doubt the Versa could overwhelm a rollerskate's toe stop.

I think it still costs too much...if they sold at let's say 7k or 8k...it would be a much better deal...but still 10k for a brand new car with a warranty is where it's at.

Honestly, I bet Nissan sells a ton of them. Under 10k for a brand new japanese car (even though its made in mexico) is a big deal IMO

man....it'd be nice if they brought back stripper cars and NOT sold them at a higher price and claiming BS track model "weight reduction" stuff.

like ordering a Civic base as **** but getting Si suspension and drivetrain with non of the fluff.

mine really doesn't have much besides an AC and 6 speaker stereo...but still.

What's the cost of adding the AC? That's all I'd add.

Radio can be dealt with later. Power locks just break. Power Windows just brake. ABS just breaks.

Less crap = greater reliability

Me too, but they're selling for MSRP because of justifiably high demand. But if I was paying a premium for a microcar I'd go all out and buy a Mini.

Add in power locks, so I can have a remote door open/lock, and A/C and I'd buy it for lets say 12,000. Can't beat a brand new car and warranty for that price.
