Hello:

New to the forum but from reading on internet there seems to be a lot of talent on here. So the issue I am having maybe worse then I thought. The family went to the hills for the weekend and during one of the stops the M wouldnt start. The car turns over fine, but just wont come to life. Had it towed home, plugged in the code reader and its pulling code for bank 1 CPS... replaced it, tested plugs for power, ground and continuity back to the computer, all good. I did forget to mention that the ground wire to the battery was off when we tried to start it...opps

After everything I have done is there anymore I can do or is it best to take it to the dealer, cut my loses and bite the bullet. I am really thinking the ecm is trash from the ground wire coming off during travel but I not a professional so I am looking for a professional opinion.
:ohno:
Thank you in advance!

Try simple first. Did you check your battery? Insufficient voltage could be the culprit. With these cars, even a small dip can make a big difference. Your ground wire coming off during travel shouldn't hurt the car at all.

Having the battery checked first definitely makes sense, but based on other posts with a code for CPS bank 1, you may need to replace CPS bank 2 and at least one other sensor (TPS maybe). There is a search button toward the top right of this page. Use it, because I don't remember the who or when to when I most recently saw a thread about that. I believe replacing those should be much less expensive than a trip to the dealer.

ETA: The code is CPS code indicates a problem with a shaft position sensor that may be cam or crank (not TPS). This has been determined/confirmed below, and I am adding it to my post for searchability (and in case I ever need it). There are definitely between 2 and 4 sensors. The M45 and M35 may have a different number of sensors. I believe another thread indicates that there is at least one sensor in at least one model that the FSM doesn't show, but that may not be accurate.

I did check the battery and its 12.5 v so anything over 10.5v is sufficient enough to firethe brain.do you think when the negeitive vame off during travel could have fried the ecm?

Ok, so after searching through the forum and reading about the CPS it appears that the P0134 code that I am getting could be one of 4 sensors (2 cam / 2 crank). Do you think if one or two of the four are out the car wouldn't start? I know they all play a factor in delivering spark to the engine so do I buy the 4 sensors and replace or do I take it to the dealer is the MM dollar question?!?!

I am certain that the ECM is fine as of now, but if changing the sensors doesn't resolve the issue I am fearful of the outcome if were to take to the stealer...

If you can add any input to anything that I may have over looked please let me know because what little hair I have I would like to keep :rotfl

Thank you!

Are you certain this is the error code? There is no P0134 for 2006 M45 in the service manual. Verify.
[Look out for P0011;P0021; P0335; P0340]

 Correction, the code that is coming up is P0340 ('camshaft positioning sensor / bank 1')

Another question just came to mind... If it is the crank sensor does anyone know where they are located? I know one is located under the car back by the bell of the trans, but I have been reading about 2?? Is there really 2 or is there just one?

Might be time to buy a Chilton's book so I can answer a few of my own questions...

Somehow all these codes are related
P0011/ P1140:Intake valve timing control position sensor Bank 1
P0021/P1145:Intake valve timing control position sensor Bank 2
P0335:crankshaft position sensor
P0340:camshaft position sensor
Most dealers however refer to the first two as camshaft sensor and the other two as the crankshaft sensor. But in truth there is only one camshaft sensor and one crankshaft sensor. Now, even though you have an error code for the camshaft sensor, I'd suggest you replace the crankshaft sensor as well because usually a weak crankshaft causes problem for the camshaft sensor as to make it dysfunctional. Both have the same part numbers 23731-4M50B (old number was 23731-4M506)The camshaft sensor, which is located in the engine bay under the air box has the part code 23731U, while the crankshaft which is under the transmission has part code 23731TA.
I'd advise you use oem sensors.

This may sound silly, but have you checked your oil level? I had a similar problem with my 2003 M45 and pulled a P0021 code after the CEL came on. Turns out I was 1qt low so all my mechanic did was fill it up and clear the code and I've had no problems since.

Costee you the man!!

Read your post went to the parts house picked up a crank sensor, yes the same as the cam, put it in and fired right up! Word of advise to anyone that may have a similar problem, the code p0340 could be one of the 4 sensors regardless of what the reader says.

Thanks again for the help!!
