Hi all,

My G's remote works sporadically lately. I thought it was the remote battery, it was replaced, still an issue. Tried the spare remote, still no better. It seems that the car does not recognize the remote. I can't open the doors, can't lock the doors and have to use the actual key from the fob. Other times it works fine.

Any recommendations or suggestions what to check/fix?

Thanks in advance,
Chris...

Welcome to NICO

Probably a visit to the dealer to have them reprogrammed.

A couple of months ago I lost my valet key. Had to get a new one from the dealer and the dealer had to reprogram both remotes.

Try to reprogram them yourself.
To reprogram key fob (keyless remote controller) follow the steps.

1. Close all doors and lock all doors

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within 10 seconds.
(The hazard warning lamp will then flash.)
NOTE:
Key should be withdrawn from ignition key cylinder completely each time.

NOTE:
Do not rush the insertion/removal key cycling process. The side
marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this step is
accurately completed.

3. Insert key on ignition key cylinder and turn ignition key switch to "AAC" position
At this time, the new ID code is entered and original (previous) ID codes are erase.

4. Press any button on the new remote controller once. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash)

NOTE:
Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button
is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful.
The side marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this
step is accurately completed and programming is successful.

If there is only one remote controller skip step 5.

5. Additional ID code entry
Release the door lock, then lock again with door lock/unlock switch
(In power window main switch)

6. Remove key from ignition

7. Unlock driver side door, open driver side door and then close the door. (END)

NOTE:
If you need to activate more than two additional new remote controllers, repeat
the procedure on step 5 "Additional ID code entry" for each new remote controller.

NOTE:
Entry of maximum four ID codes is allowed and any attempt to enter more will be ignore.

Thanks for your suggestions, however resetting the remote didn't work. BTW, I have the 'intelligent' key, maybe that is why resetting the key (using above instructions) didn't work. This morning the car started fine with the key in my pocket, but the dash display flashed the green key symbol at me several times. Is there a way to reprogram the intelligent key without going to the dealer? My dealer is 40 minutes away...

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear that the reprogramming instructions didn't work. That is actually the first time that I've seen those instructions and was never aware that you could program a key fob without going to the dealership and paying their hefty prices. I'll have to save those for a future time when I may need to program a new fob!

I have a suggestion that may help fix your issue. When was the last time your car battery was replaced, if ever? I too was having a similar issue to yours about ~1 year ago. My key fob began loosing its signal strength and then completely stopped worked after a few weeks. I, like you, tried to replace the battery inside the key fob to no avail. I took my G35 into my dealership and let them diagnosis the issue, where they found that the vehicle battery was loosing its power, thus causing the system that controls the key fob to loose its signal strength and then completely stop working. I had to replace my car battery, it cost around ~$110 with free installation at my dealership.

If you know how to test your car battery, then give it a go! Or, if you don't, bring it into some mechanic shop and they will usually do the battery test for free. Best of luck with your situation. Hope it works out!

Thanks Daniel for the suggestion. I replaced my car battery one year ago, just because if was 5 years old. I do have the car battery on a charger every two weeks as I don't drive long distances sufficient to keep the battery at full charge. The reprogramming works only on the regular key fob, will not work with the intelligent (smart) key. I'm going to replace the battery in the smart key again, as my dash light is blinking to indicate my smart key needs a new battery. Will see if this help..
