2004 Maxima with 135,000 miles. At 60,000 miles had to have Transmission Control Valve Assembly replaced when car would down shift hard at approx 20 mph.. It is happening again at 135,000 miles - estimated cost is +/- $1,600. The first time was under warranty - now it is out of my pocket. Has anyone had any experience with Transmission failures. How long should dealership warranty the initial repair.

Have you done any transmission flush since the the transmission was repaired? It's recommended to flush the ATF every 24-30K miles. Also, the 4-speed transmission in the 04 Maxima is problematic. It would be better to do a pan drop, clean the pan and magnets, replace the filter and install new gasket followed by a flush and addition of LubeGard Red ATF protectant. It may not fix the problem but not much harm in trying. If problem persisted, get a 2nd opinion from another shop (avoid AAMCO unless that particular branch can be trusted).

SE never got the 4 speed, only the SL.

I find it kind of odd that a valvebody issue would return so quickly like that. I wonder if there's an underlying problem or perhaps that's not really the issue this time.

Probably no warranty once the initial warranty has expired. However IF YOU PAY FOR A REPAIR the dealer will normally warranty it for life. Check with the dealer about the warranty before you have it done. You may want to consider a reputable transmission repair shop.
