Alright well My m45 use to burn oil pretty bad last year. I kept researching and only thing I saw was the crankcase thread which didnt seem to help most of the people that tried it.....

I use to burn about 2 quarts between oil changes every 4k mile before

I gutted out the headers you can replace it with a test pipe and some welding and if you live in a emission state you can always weld magna flow cats in its place........but anywho I did that and Switched to rotella Diesel oil. I went with 15w-40 they also have 5w-40 Now its been a year..... I didnt want to post it till I didnt a long term test. Welll a year later with over 30,000 miles driven on the car she does not burn oil at all. Car runs smoother and stronger than ever (also improved time on the track) However the cats on the exhaust might be clogging up now (170k miles) so im thinking of getting Magna flow high flow cats to replace it. Im sure someone will bash it but hey it worked for me just passing it on to the rest of you fellars. .

A well worn engine will need a heavier weight oil, so going from a 5w to 15w will result in a thicker oil when the oil heats up - this will improve lubrication and the actual thickening of the oil will reduce consumption of oil as the less of the oil will blow by the rings.

It is normal for an older engine to require a heavier weight oil, glad this worked out for you.

170K miles - that is great service- love the engines- no wonder that they are always in the top 10 engines.
