2001 Pathfinder Speedometer stuck

Postby Joberoi » Sun Jul 01, 2012 8:45 pm

Speedometer has gotten stuck at 20 miles. Odometer and Trip meter work. Will the solution require a new Speedometer? Or can there be a smaller/less expensive component that may have failed? Speed sensor appears to be working as odometer continues register miles. I am looking forward to your guidance. Are speedometers also sold or I will need to buy the whole instrument cluster? The car has done 107K miles. Thank you. -Jay Oberoi

Put the instrument cluster into diagnostic mode; see page EL-120 of the factory service manual. If the needle moves to the proper position as shown, it is most likely not the speedometer itself. There are further diagnoses for other potential causes, but rule out the gauge first.

Thank you Towncivilian for a warm welcome to NICO. This response was extremely educational to me. I could run the diagnosis EL-120. All meters behaved as per the test except for Speedometer which stayed stuck where it is. The next step is checking resistance on back of the Gauge. I have been reading up on how to open the instrument cluster. There are many cautions like removing the battery cables and potential of damaging SRS. Can someone add as to how sensitive this task is, or any tips from your experience? I am reasonably dexterous but new to this.

See this thread for instructions on removing the instrument cluster.
