I am new to the DIY repair and any question unasked is probably just a stupid question. So I need to remove the tail light assembly and I'm not going to assume but I am going to ask to make sure i have the steps right.looks like there is one blue harness with a 2 prong and a 3 prong connector just unplug that and then cut the side marker 2 black wires and then unbolt the whole unit and then rebolt the unit and re attach the side marker lights wires and then plug up the blue harness again and all should be well ?

i guess for clarification the only thing wrong with this was the yellow lense was broken so it would not pass inspection so i bought a whole used light assembly for 25 dollars and am just replacing the entire box.

seems like you have got everything covered.

. . . with the exception of cutting those wires. Just pull the rubber boot out of the body where that sidemarker is. That would be the best route bro.
