My 1987 d21 with the four cylinder will start and stall immediately. It fires quickly and then quits. You can feather the accelerator and keep it running briefly. I changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel and air filters and this has not fixed the problem. I switched the two coils with no effect. I am in need of suggestions. Thanks

sounds like fuel pump or carb, mostly carb. It's the z motor right? 8 plugs?

How briefly? Does it run rough while it runs or smooth but with no power.

Is your the Z24i? I stands for injected.

It is fuel injected. It runs for about 3-5 seconds while feathering the throttle

Check your fuel pressure. You can also take of the aircleaner cover and look down the throtlle body throat. You can see if the injectors are spraying fuel. Don't do this if it backfires a bit.

Get some starter fluid in a spray can and see if it keeps running while spraying. This will help indicate it's a fuel problem and not spark.

Double (and even triple) check your plug wire routing. It's easy to get then mixed up. I had a miss on mine, changed the plugs, cap, rotor and wires and still had it. Turned out I crossed a few wires. Replacing them fixed the original problem, but I introduced a new one that showed the same symptoms.

If it's a fuel problem, then the fun really begins. You can check out a past thread of mine where I had the engine cutout @ around 2500 rpm, I chased for over 6 months.

I can keep it idling with starting fluid. So I guess my next step is purchasing a fuel pressure gauge to see if the pump is functioning properly.
