08 G35S Sedan Brakes squeal in reverse?

Postby bernoullion » Wed Jan 19, 2011 8:28 pm

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a CPO '08 Infiniti G35S Sedan and am loving it! I actually had an '08 328i Coupe before this and I'm still quite impressed by the Infiniti (and I like the lower payments!.

There's one thing I have noticed with the car and wanted to ask you guys about it. I've noticed that when I first get in my car and reverse out of my parking spot, as I depress the brake pedal there's a significant squeal that I hear. At first I actually thought it was some sort of parking sensor, but it's the brakes. It seems to have gotten louder the colder the mornings have become. It never happens when I'm driving forward and hit the brakes. Anyone know what might be causing this? I asked the dealer and he said to give it some time and gave me some reason about rust being on the calipers or something...

Any help would be appreciated! Again, I'm loving this car.

There is some type of build up on the rotors. Does the noise go away after some time if you try going in reverse again? 6sp or automatic? If manual, do you use the e brake often?

I think it does go away after I've been driving for a while, though maybe it's because I dont usually go in reverse afterwards. I'll check today. It's an automatic and I don't use the e brake.

Well, it appears the brakes squeak only the first couple of times I brake in reverse. However, there is also a very light squeaking when I brake going forward. This also goes away shortly after driving for a couple of minutes.

Any ideas? It's just strange to me that a "Certified" car would squeak so loudly when pressing the brakes in reverse.

Could be a matter of taking the brake pads out, cleaning them off and applying some anti squeal and buttoning everything back up. Take it in and have them check it over. Brakes on the "g" have always been finicky.

Yeah, I'm going in tomorrow to get my plates so maybe I'll have them take a look. Thanks for the help.

Mine does that as well in the colder weather. It will squeak when I am leaving the lot here at work, and then after it has gone a few miles no more squeaky. I have had the car since new, and I haven't lost much sleep over it...since it goes away after the moisture (ie: humidity) gets off the rotor surface within a couple minutes.

Doesn't hurt to have them looked at though....costs nothing. :thewave:

Well, I took it into the dealership finally and they said they couldn't reproduce the noise (which seems kind of funny to me since it's happened every time I start the car and reverse out of my parking space). They said they took apart the brakes and there's plenty of life left on the pads and that nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

I have noticed a uniform circle of rust on the inner part of the rotors (you can see it just by looking at the wheel). Not sure if this is any sort of problem...

Also, a friend of mine suggested "bedding in" the brakes. Has anyone tried this or had any experience with this?

I just one and Im loving this car also. Fun to drive! But I also am having this problem. I took my car to the dealership and took it apart. It seems that on the last brake inspection it seems the rear brake shims were not put back. Due to being new to this site, I searched around and found out that its not really necessary or a concern for safety. I really didnt see any definite answers but would like up to date suggestions.

My 09 Sedan does this too. Not all the time, but if it's been wet it seems to do it more. I wouldn't worry about it; probably just slight rust on the rotors that causes noise in reverse when the pads are applied.

Guys...

just bumping this from the dead, as an FYI for maybe someone else in the future... I had the same issue a short while back on my M35, even after having new pads and rotors installed in the rear. After a tear down on the brake system, they found that the one of the rear calipers had seized up. Not completely, but it was very close to causing some serious damage, had i not taken care of it when i did.

It's the factory pad/rotor combo. Mine with aftermarket pads is fine but the sedan with newly replaced Infiniti rotors and pads still squeal.

I've been having majot issues witht the rear brake son my 2009 G37S Sedan. Had some independent shop do the front without an issue. When they did the rear they didn't replace with factory oem. Three sets off pads (last being factory oem) and the rotors being machined 3x's. I'm still getting a squeal. At higher speeds 70-80; when you get on the brake hard; I get a little bit of a brief shake. The bozos tossed the shims from the hardware kit after they swapped out the original pads with cheap replacements. Have replaced hardware kit as well. I'm thinkingh of replacing pads & rotors with some high performace ebc pads and slotted, dempled rotors ! Any suggestions ?

StopTech rotors and hawk pads should work. Someone screwed bad you if they've had to turn the rear rotors 3 times.

Contact Mike at tunerzstore.com or contact one of NICO's other vendors for pricing if you are interested in new hardware.

Yeah, I'm going to have her wait out the squek until it needs new brakes. I like ebc's brakes too. Any feed back on those ?

Brake squeak is becoming more common on newer vehicles due to the materials used in the pads and rotors. If you look at the brake pads those shiny spots on brake pads are pieces of metal, and the rotors are also metal. after the vehicle sits for a period of time it deveopls a thin film of rust. The squeak noise you are hearing is the thin layer of rust coming off after the first few stops. Next time you wash you car in your driveway and let it sit, and look at the rotors. Any question? I am an ase certified technician for a Nissan Dealer, and deal with this issue all the time.

I purchased a 2008 G35s sedan back in November of 2011. It has 41K miles now. EVERY time I would back up from a cold start, my brakes would screech really loud. I'm embarassed that I'm waking up my neighbors in the morning. So far I've had my original rotors turned and new pads put on. It still happend. I then bought NEW PowerStop (not OEM) rotors and carbon-ceramic pads. It was quiet for 1 week. These new rotors do not rust (silver zinc plated). I've now spent close to $1,000 in brakes. I'm going insane trying to figure out what is causing this loud noise. So far the only thing that hasn't been replaced are the calipers. Any suggestions?

Well, it's not the calipers. I had the noise with my G37s (Akebono big brakes) AND my 2007 G35s (standard calipers). I had new rear rotors and pads (factory) put on the G35s and it still happens. I replaced the brake pads on the g37s and it's now quiet in reverse. In the rear I'm running Hawk pads with factory rotors.

I'm not claiming that's a fix for the noise, just that my coupe is now quiet.

@Audtatious: Was it the front or rear brakes that were making the noise in reverse? I haven't been able to determine which rotors/pads are making the noise.

I sprayed my rotors with Gunk's Squeal Medic: http://www.gunk.com/products/cat_det.asp It worked for 3 days. I'm still having bad back-up squeal with the brakes. Which Hawk pads did you get for the rear? Choices: HP Plus w/0.539 Thickness / HPS Performance Street w/0.539 Thickness / Performance Ceramic w/0.539 Thickness. Thanks!

Thanks audtatious! It worked. It has been 3 weeks now and no squeal. I put the Hawk PCs on all calipers. What a relief. I wish I used Hawk originally.

Good deal. I need to do the same for the sedan because it still squeals after the Infiniti brake job.
